I am hearing that Toumba Stadium will be closed for work related to Olympic Games. According to reports PAOK will have to find another stadium to play their games next season, since the stadium will be closed for the whole 2003-2004 football season.
None of the reports give any details on what work is to be done on Toumba Stadium for the Olympics. Do you have any detailed information? Also why does Toumba have to closed down for such long period of time? For them to close the stadium for the whole season, some major constrution work has to take place. Any information will be appreciated.

According to "Athens 2004" officials, Toumba will NOT close. All the necessary works involving the playing field will be carried out during the summer. The stadium will then continue to be used by PAOK next season, as the works that will take place during that time will not affect its ability to host matches. These works (which should last aprox. 12 months) include: - the replacement of the roof with a new one ----> - the construction of a 5-storey building behind the main stand, that will house stadium service areas (all new press facilities, VIP areas, new facilities for the athletes etc).

So why is there talk of PAOK playing next season at the Kalamaria Stadium? Also there is talk that Aris will have to find another place to pla since Harilaou is also scheduled to close for Olympic related work. According to reports both PAOK and Aris arre considering the Kalamaria option. Tell me if I am wrong, but isn't Kalamaria Stadium also scheduled for Olympic related work? Where will all the Thessaloniki teams play?

The statement I mentioned in my previous post was only made 5 days ago and clarified things for PAOK. As for Aris, they are still not sure if they'll have to move. Apollon Kalamarias say they will not allow any other team to use their stadium, whatever the circumstances. I really don't know how this will unfold - we'll just have to wait and see. Regarding Kalamaria Stadium: it will remain open next season.

Update on this subject:
It seems that PAOK will have to move after all. Club officials visited the ministry of sports a couple of days ago, asking for Toumba to remain open next season. This was after all the latest official statement by "Athens 2004". Things have changed though, as Mr George Lianis, the minister of sports, made today the following statement:
PAOK will play at Kalamaria and Aris at Nea Efkarpia for the next season. This will be temporary. Kalamaria Stadium will have 1,816 new permanent seats added. There will also be a new temporary stand, holding approximately 3,000 - 4,000 spectators.

Does that include UEFA Cup games by both teams? I know Iraklis played UEFA Cup at Nea Efkarpia, but will UEFA let PAOK play at Kalamraia?
Still, what are the improvements being made at Toumba that will force the team to play at Kalamaria? If it is only the new building and the roof, I think Toumba did not have to close.
When is the work at Kalamaria stadium supposed to start? Are they going to have the new stands ready before the new season starts? Probably not.

Still, what are the improvements being made at Toumba that will force the team to play at Kalamaria? If it is only the new building and the roof, I think Toumba did not have to close. The works are mainly those that I described above. As for the stadium closing, this story is currently unfolding. One day the minister says this ("the grounds will have to close for security reasons"), the next day some "government sources" say the opposite. I'll keep this thread informed. When is the work at Kalamaria stadium supposed to start? Are they going to have the new stands ready before the new season starts? Probably not. Maybe the oracle at Delphi could help with this one ;D

New update on Toumba:
PAOK will not have to move (surprise-surprise)! It was agreed that the stadium will remain open next season. Around January the main west stand (gates 1, 2, 3) will close, in order for the necessary works to take place. The rest of the stadium will operate and will be able to host matches.
All this was the result of a meeting between club officials and the Minister of Culture. It seems that the decision seals (?) the whole subject.

Thanks again! ;D Boy you are quick. So they suspect it will be completed before the games in August? And also for PAOK to use next year?

I doubt that the whole thing will be completely finished by the Olympics. I mean the new building behind the west stand and all its interior spaces. It's not needed to be anyway, as the stadium will just serve as a training venue. I believe that it will be ready sometime early next season.
