What is the status of Karaiskaki stadium as of now? Have construction crews began working on the refurbishment of the stadium, now that Olympiakos has a 49 lease on the stadium? A will the stadium be completely torn down, or will they leave it and start from there? Also, I've heard that the stadium should be finished by Fall (apprx. Nov) 2003, is there any truth to that rumor? Thanks.

I actually have a picture of the Entire Pireaus/Faliron area from the Athens 2004 web site dated February 2003, and at the top is Karaiskaki. If you look real close you can see that the stadium is the same as it was before deliberations. If you want the actual picture I can send it.

The stadium will be demolished and a completely new one will be built. The date works will start is April 7 (according to 'Athens 2004' officials). It is scheduled to be ready in July 2004.

I though they were just going to add new seats, and those 2 new "buildings" behind the longer stands. Now they're going to build a new stadium? I don't see how they're gonna finish in time...

I don't see how they're gonna finish in time... they will do it by working on 24 hour basis. 3 shifts x 8 hours =24 hours. It will be a new stadium in full as the existing one will be demolished starting in a couple of weeks.

Yes, that's right. It'll be an entirely new stadium. But why haven't they published any plans for it? I mean, what is it, a state secret or something

Now that the plans for Karaiskaki allow for the demolishing of the old stadium, will Olympiakos push for the new stadium to look like the proposed Rendi ;D stadium a couple years ago, or will they revert to the old rectangular shape of Karaiskaki, or do they have a totally different design?

To be honest with you ThrillosAG, we have no idea as to the looks of the new Karaiskaki. No one has! Except of course for the few Olympiakos and 'Athens 2004' top officials and the FIFA delegation that were shown the plans some days ago. The only sure facts are that the stadium will change orientation (new one: north-south) and that it will be an all-seater with a capacity of about 32,000 (all seats covered). I guess they will have to eventually make the plans public sometime! The sooner the better!

So, since the new stadium will be completely covered, the plans and photos that have already seen the light of day (those with the 5-storey buildings on each one of the longer stands etc.) must have been scrapped. Is that right? I wonder what the new stadium will look like. Like the new AEK stadium, perhaps?

I tell ya this is complicated. First it's a new stadium (Rendi), then it's a re-do of the existing Karaiskaki, now it's a totally new stadium. I must say I am eager to see the new design (how could they not have made it public yet?!).

Oh well ...until they release the plans, I'm hoping they pushed this design... ...only a dream....

Woah! This is too good to be true, especially considering the available space at Faliro. My guess is that they want to remove the pitch in order to save some space for the other constructions. That's what a great deal of the fuss with the Olympic Committee was all about. So, space is just too scarce for such a masterpiece.

Is this an actual plan for the stadium or just wishful thinking

Is this an actual plan for the stadium or just wishful thinking A little bit of both ;D...that was the plan for Rendi Stadium, but now that they plan to tear down Karaiskaki, I would think that the developers would push that design...something like San Siro in Italy. To me this design would get Olympiakos a lot of publicity not only in Greece but all over Europe...maybe. But like you said...there might not be that much room to build a stadium of this size.

Guys, for more on the Rendi Stadium plans, have a look at its page that was previously on the site: www.stadia.gr/rendi.htmlPrometheus, you're wrong! There was more to it. It all started 5 years ago, when Olympiakos wanted to upgrade Karaiskaki. Their plans for the stadium: 45,000 seats, lowering of the pitch, two giant arcs supporting two roofs over the longer stands etc. You can read all about it in the "News" section. When they got no positive response, they decided to opt for Rendi, then again Karaiskaki (the plan with the two towers), again Rendi (the plans in the page I gave you) and now (finally ) it's Karaiskaki again!!! Are you dizzy? I know I am
